1. The lounge is for the CodeProject community to discuss things of interest to the community, and as a place for the whole community to participate. It is, first and foremost, a respectful meeting and discussion area for those wishing to discuss the life of a Software developer.
The #1 rule is: Be respectful of others, of the site, and of the community as a whole.
2. Technical discussions are welcome, but if you need specific programming question answered please use Quick Answers[^], or to discussion your programming problem in depth use the programming forums[^]. We encourage technical discussion, but this is a general discussion forum, not a programming Q&A forum. Posts will be moved or deleted if they fit better elsewhere.
3. No sys-admin, networking, "how do I setup XYZ" questions. For those use the SysAdmin[^] or Hardware and Devices[^] forums.
4. No politics (including enviro-politics[^]), no sex, no religion. This is a community for software development. There are plenty of other sites that are far more appropriate for these discussions.
5. Nothing Not Safe For Work, nothing you would not want your wife/husband, your girlfriend/boyfriend, your mother or your kid sister seeing on your screen.
6. Any personal attacks, any spam, any advertising, any trolling, or any abuse of the rules will result in your account being removed.
7. Not everyone's first language is English. Be understanding.
Please respect the community and respect each other. We are of many cultures so remember that. Don't assume others understand you are joking, don't belittle anyone for taking offense or being thin skinned.
We are a community for software developers. Leave the egos at the door.
cheers,
Chris Maunder

My wife came home to find me fitting keypad lock/entry units to our internal doors....
Wife: What are you doing?
Me: Just making the place more secure.
Wife: Are you fitting locks to all our internal doors? Including the Utility Room and Toilet?
Me: Yeah. At work, the security guys have insisted that all our internal websites use https, because...
Wife: I don't give a f*&! what your moronic "security guys" [she air-quoted] do at work. Why do we need locks on our INTERNAL doors when we have locks on our outside doors and windows?
Me: Well, someone might break in.
Wife: And that's why we have a burglar alarm - ISN'T IT?
I can tell she's getting a little(?) agitated, so decide to ignore her question and explain the "benefits"?
Me: So, the way this system works is that: each day a random 12-digit security code will be generated, which can be u...
Wife: Have you gone f&*!ing mental? Or senile? Or both?
Me: Look, once I've got this done, we...
Wife: "We"? There's no f*%!ing "we" anymore! I'm leaving you.
Whilst she was upstairs packing her bags, I got to thinking about the logic of what she was saying - and have to confess, she may have a point. And yes, at work, if we want to RDP on to one of our web servers, (including Dev & Test), even to do something as innocuous as bounce an App Pool, we first have to log on to CyberArk to get the daily random password, (which needs to be verified on a mobile phone app), before we can even log on to the web server. I think "leaving" might be the sensible option.

Many years ago, I had to visit a secure computer center - so secure the building was designed to be missile proof, and all the doors had tag readers. You didn't have a tag, the door wouldn't open. Visitors didn't get a tag (so we couldn't steal them, probably) which left one problem - even the loo door needed a tag so visitors had to be accompanied to the loo and then "waited for" when they were finished ...

I was reminiscing about some members who are no longer active on here and thought of the one and only Michael Martin - a constant source of crude, lewd but always amusing drunken posts - did he leave or was he pushed ?

I think he walked, possibly after a deep and meaningful with Chris M.
I may still have his phone number somewhere - we met a couple of times years ago.

I liked him , told it like it is - mean what you say and say what you mean - he certainly did and I'm sure he still does

I second your description.
As I recall, he had a problem posting Soapbox material in other forums. I don't know whether he jumped or was pushed...
Dalek Dave stood for election in the wilds of the UK and has never been heard from since.
Nagy Vilmos is still heard from occasionally.
Dave Auld has developed another interest (!) - astronomy. He still posts occasionally.
Those are the regulars that I remember.

fat_boy posted incessantly about global warming and edited the CodeProject Wikipedia entry to make disparaging comments about other members.
Dalek Dave contested elections (twice?) and lost from a right wing safe seat that went left after making disparaging comments about gypsies, when the country as a whole lurched sharply to the right. He also edited Wikipedia but to 'back up' his lie that Ian Botham had died.
Curiously enough, the latter was the target of the former, who called him a "desperate vote grabbing accountant".
There's also me, who used to make "It's Friday! What are you doing this weekend?" posts, but I'm not really gone
Cheers,
Vikram.

Fat boy is still around, but I don't remember his current alias (number 29 in a long series?)

I was also wondering about a character who was active until autumn but hasn't posted since. His last posts were about leaving his job, but I also believe he'd mentioned being ill, so he may no longer be with us.

There was also a member who used to post APOD daily - Astronomy Picture of the Day. Not seen for a long time.

I was the one that pushed him that fateful morning. He was spouting off his usual drivel and I responded in kind with my flame thrower and Epic Troll Hunter armor set.
I got banned from the site for 2 weeks and Michael quit the site for good.

To be honest, it was always on the cards that he'd have to tone down or go. And toning down would have meant drinking less, and that wasn't an approach MM really approved of.
Remember, we are talking about a guy whose account was closed five times in a single weekend back in the days when the Soapbox was still unrestricted ...

There's also V. who posted the MQOTD - Movie Quote Of The Day.
RyanDev (and his aliases) is also no longer active. He posted mainly Microsoft fanboism and troll posts.

I remember one toxic person, not sure if I remember his name correctly so I won't post it in case it's not him, but he was banned some time ago.
Guy had over 200K rep I believe, maybe even over 300K, regular in the Soapbox.
He was very Christian, Trump supporter, against abortion and I think against gay marriage as well, as it's the holy union between two people of the opposite sex.
If you didn't agree with him he'd call you names (called me something like a murderer who wasn't worthy of the name human because I'm pro-abortion, just like more than 50% of Europeans), but he'd always say it wasn't personal and just his humble opinion.
Also, all of his opinions were facts, according to him.
Very glad to see him gone and I know I'm not the only one
My first contact here on CP was with Henry Minute, I think.
He answered a question of mine on Custom WinForms Controls.
Very nice and helpful guy, he was a regular here too.
Guy passed away a couple of years ago, probably close to ten years already, or so someone posted in The Lounge at the time.
Very sad indeed

Also Anna, Trollslayer, and Leckey; all ran off by idiots of one sort or another.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Not one to brag, but this one fills me with joy and pride
As of yesterday I'm renting my very own office.
I'm renting three offices with another guy I sometimes work with, so 1.5 offices per person.
We have our own office and a shared office for our employees (he has one, I almost have one).
So far, my partner worked from home and I worked from a shared space that used to be sociable, but has been getting emptier as COVID lasted.
Still waiting for my new furniture, getting a sit-standing desk, nice chairs, meeting room table, the works.
The biggest downside so far is that my commute went from 6km to 14km, still planning on taking the bike though.
